Competition is a big part of SkillsUSA. Local competitions are held in February and state competitions are held the first week in April. State competitions are held in Des Moines, Iowa. Those qualifying for nationals then compete in Kansas City in June. Eleven NCC students competed at the National SkillsUSA Conference this past summer.

During the competitions students worked against the clock and each other, proving their expertise in occupations like electronics, computer-aided drafting, precision machining, medical assisting and culinary arts. All contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations, labor organizations and test competencies are set by industry.

SkillsUSA is a national partnership of students, teachers and industry, working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA chapters help students excel who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations. SkillsUSA has more than 300,000 students and instructors as members.

Each year NCC has consistently brought home awards and several national qualifiers from state SkillsUSA competition. The first place winners of the Iowa SkillsUSA Championships will go on to compete in the national event to be held the last full week of June in Kansas City.
