This is how the CDL process looks with the Entry Level Driver’s Training requirements.

Step 1: Get your Commercial Learner’s Permit by passing the written tests at a local DOT Driver’s License Station or your local county courthouse. You will need to take the tests for CDL General Knowledge, Air Brakes and Combination for a Class A CDL.  Here is a link to the Iowa DOT Modernization Study Guide: https://iowadot.gov/pubs/CDL-manual.pdf The Iowa DOT also has a Study App available to prepare for your written testing if you check their website.

Step 2: Register online at NCC’s website to get set up for your ELDT Theory portion of the process which is at the bottom of this page. Cost for that portion is $150.

Step 3: Do the 17.5 hours of online Theory at your leisure.

Step 4: Contact NCC at (712) 631-5654 to schedule the next available time to come to NCC’s campus to do both of your Behind the Wheel portions of the ELDT. (Range and Road)

Step 5: Come to NCC’s campus for 2+ days to complete your Behind the Wheel sections and practice for your DOT test. At this time the remaining fee of $1,345 is due for the training.

Step 6: Test with a DOT Examiner on NCC’s campus.

Step 7: GO to the DOT and get you license issued and head out on the road!

Entry Level Driver’s Training takes about 2+ days of online Theory and parts of 3 days on campus for the Behind the Wheel portions. Cost for that full week of training is $1495 per person and includes the DOT testing fees. ($150 of the $1495 is paid up front when you register for the online Theory below) You may qualify for financial assistance to cover the cost of your training. Check out this link to see of you qualify: https://nwicc.edu/tuit…/gap-pace-initial-eligibility-form/

We hold Behind the Wheel classes almost every week. We are usually booked with BTW training about 3-4 weeks in advance, but that does change frequently.

You will need some experience in a larger vehicle prior to attending training at NCC, including how to operate a manual transmission with air brakes. We also stress we are NOT a driving school teaching you how to drive. We are helping and instructing you to meet the requirements of the ELDT while preparing you for your testing with a DOT Examiner. We have over 97% testing success rate for those who attend our EDLT/CDL Class.

CDL ELDT Theory – Online

This is the initial step to completing your Entry Level Drivers Training. The FMSCA’s new Entry Level Driver’s Training (ELDT) rule took effect on Feb 7, 2022. Under the new rule, entry level drivers (drivers who are applying for an initial CDL, upgrading a current CDL, or obtaining a Haz Mat, Passenger or School Bus endorsement) must successfully complete a prescribed program of Theory and Behind the Wheel instruction prior to taking a CDL test. This training must be provided by a school or entity listed on the FMSCA’s Training Provider Registry. This training will consist of approximately 17.5 hours of online Theory training provided by a third-party contractor. This portion will involve over 30 sessions meeting the requirements of the FMSCA as defined in 383.91(a)(1). Each session requires a proficiency level of 80%.

After registering for the class, you will receive a link to the online course within 1-3 business days from JJ Keller. A study/training textbook is available upon request. Additional fees may be applied for shipping. Please contact the NCC Continuing Education office if you are interested.

After you complete the online Theory class, please contact the NCC Continuing Education office at 712-324-5061 to schedule the Behind the Wheel training.

Class A or B – CDL Testing

NOTE: Testing is allowed ONLY if exempt from ELDT and/or only if you have previously had CDL.

NCC offers certified DOT testing for individuals seeking to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License using an NCC-provided vehicle. There are three required tests that must be taken in the following order: Vehicle Inspection, Skills Test, and Road Test.

Prior to testing, the participant must take the required written/computer tests at your local driver’s license station to obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). You must have your CLP a minimum of 14 days prior to testing for your license.

NOTE: This option is only available for those who are Exempt from Entry Level Driver’s Training OR have already competed the ELDT.

Cost
3 tests – $100 each.
Upon successfully passing all three CDL tests, you may obtain your CDL at any driver’s license issuance location. Retests, if needed, can also be administered for an additional fee.
