Group Fitness Classes

Northwest Iowa Community College is pleased to offer Group Fitness classes at the Lifelong Learning and Recreation Center. We help you stay on track with your wellness and fitness goals. We provide certified instructors and a fun group fitness environment!

Our Group Fitness Classes include classes for strength training, cardio, and much more.

Group fitness participants must be a minimum of 13 years old to participate.

Meet our Instructors

Janice Wielenga

Janice is a resident of Sheldon and has been part of the community since 1988. She has worked at Sheldon Hospital in the Rehab Department and the Wellness Center since 2004 and gained extensive knowledge and experience from this work. Janice is a Certified Personal Trainer and has been teaching classes for the last few years. Through continued education, Janice has been certified in multiple areas including: Total Body, Boot camp, Pilates, High Intensity Interval Training, Kid Fitness, and many others.

Kathleen Osterman

Kathleen is a registered nurse who has spent much of her life involved in fitness in one way or another. It started with 23 years spent in the military and having to pass annual fitness tests. She continued her dedication to fitness in civilian life. In the past, she has run multiple miles a day, was an avid racket ball player, and participated in a biking club. Kathleen now is a regular morning walker and has recently added yoga to her regime. She is now a Registered Yoga Teacher and finds that it is a great way of increasing flexibility, maintaining muscle endurance and strength, and improves balance.

Jan Snyder

Jan has been practicing yoga for several years and teaching yoga at area wellness facilities since 2006. She has her Level 1 & Level II certifications through YogaFit® and has completed 200 hours of instruction with Janine Gustafson at Yoga Okoboji. She is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) through the Yoga Alliance. Jan teaches beginner and intermediate classes that focus on the three important limbs of Hatha Yoga: breathe (pranayama), posture (asana), and presence. In Jan’s classes she provides students with a combination of strength, stretch, balance, cardio, and relaxation. Jan’s mantra is “Yoga can be for anyone or any body!”.

Angel Bengard

Angel is a certified NETA group fitness and PIYO (TM) instructor. She is also licensed to teach Aqua Zumba®, Zumba ® and Zumba® Toning, Zumba® Sentao, Zumba® Gold, Zumba® Kids & Kids Jr and Zumbini TM. She has been teaching for over 3 years in Sheldon and Orange City. By day Angel is a part-time stay at home mom to twins Stella and Nels (born in March 2016) and is a Senior Coatings Chemist responsible for all of the wood coatings developed at Diamond Vogel in Orange City. Angel’s fitness journey began over 5 years ago when she decided to change her life and started weight training with a personal trainer and taking Zumba® classes in her hometown of Minneapolis. She was able to lose 75 pounds by changing her life style. Angel fell in love with taking Zumba® classes and decided to become an instructor when she moved to Iowa in 2013. Angel is excited to share how Zumba fitness is for every body and fitness level. Zumba® has been described as “exercise in disguise”, you will have so much fun you wouldn’t even know that you are working out. Angel looks forward to “shaking it” with you in the pool and on land.

Carrie Wahlstrom

Carrie is a certified Group Fitness Instructor through the National Exercise Trainers Association at the LLRC. She graduated from Western Iowa Tech Community College in their Certified Personal Trainer program. Carrie has always had a passionfor health and fitness and loves to help others reach their goals as well. After college Carrie was excited to come back to her hometown and help people in her community have the same outlook she has in physical fitness. Her hobbies include golfing, running, working out, being outside, and spending time with friends and family. When she’s not teaching group fitness classes, you can find her on the golf course working on her game.

Rachel Duncanson

Rachel has been truly inspired by her yoga practice and wants to share that inspiration with you. Since starting her yoga practice in 2014 Rachel has lost nearly 200 lbs and has achieved her RYT-200 yoga certification through the Evolve Yoga Studio in Sioux City. She is ready to help you discover yoga no matter what your health level. Rachel has been many things in her past, a math teacher, an engineer, but mostly she is a student of life. Come learn about the possibilities of good health with Rachel.

Ricky Ortiz

Ricky is originally from California and moved to Iowa to attend school and wrestle at Northwestern College in 2011. He graduated from Northwestern College in 2016 with a degree in Kinesiology and a focus in strength and conditioning. During Ricky’s four years in the strength conditioning program, he worked with various sports. He has participated in sports for most of his life including baseball, wrestling, and football. Ricky enjoys working one on one with people interested in fitness. He also enjoys working with sports teams and athletes. Ricky likes taking on new challenges and finding ways to help improve the lives of others. He holds a USAW Olympic Barbell Lifting certification, and is in the process of obtaining his Personal Training certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Ornuma (Aon) Andersen

Aon originated from Thailand, and she first came to yoga class for physical strength – but she has found more benefits than what she initially expected. Aon’s yoga mat is now her second home. In September of 2016 she became a registered yoga teacher (RYT200), and she loves sharing what she has learned.

Kristin (Piller) Bailey

Kristin was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Kristin (KP) is bringing her fun and energetic barre workouts to NW Iowa. She is a physical therapist assistant and has always been involved in fitness. KP was a competitive gymnast and cheerleader from the age of 3 and was a head coach for Louisiana Cheer Force, a competitive cheerleading gym in Baton Rouge. She realized her love for barre in 2013 at BodySculpt Studio in Baton Rouge and wanted to bring that drive and motivation out in others. KP recently completed the National Exercise Trainers’ Association (NETA) Barre Specialty Certification, and if you’re looking for a great toning and sculpting workout that makes you leave the gym “burning for more,” meet KP at the barre!
