City employees are required to reside in the City or within thirty (30) miles of the city limits within the states of Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota, and will be given 180 days from the date of hire to comply.

Sioux City Fire Rescue (SCFR) department is an internationally accredited agency serving the citizens and visitors of Sioux City since 1888. SCFR provides the highest level of professional service possible.

SCFR EMS Division has an opening for an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) EMT or AEMT who is looking to be part of our successful team.   SCFR operates under the supervision of a contracted medical director who oversees the protocols, continuous quality improvement process and EMS providers working under his/her license.

The position provides direct patient care and transport in the prehospital environment and ensures completion of accurate and compliant electronic patient care reports consistent with CADS (Certified Ambulance Documentation Specialist) standards.  CADS course is provided during Orientation.   Additionally, performs non-emergency functions such as injury/illness prevention and other public safety activities.

Based upon the current shift schedule, which includes overtime for hours worked more than the regular workweek, the average annual wage for a starting EMT is up to $53,230.  The average annual wage for a starting AEMT is up to $60,834.  Opportunities to work additional shifts/hours are occasionally available. Hours of work will vary; the division operates every day.

EMTs must have a valid Iowa EMT or AEMT Certification at start of employment.  Candidates who are not certified in Iowa will need to provide evidence of application for reciprocity within a week of the conditional offer and will be required to provide evidence of Iowa EMT/AEMT certification prior to start of employment.

Candidates must pass a Civil Service testing process which also includes a physical agility test and an Oral Examination prior to being placed on a Civil Service Eligibility List. Job offers are conditional and contingent upon passing pre-employment physical screening (by physical therapist); urine drug screen; physical exam to include lab work, pulmonary function screen, vision screen and audiogram; and a background check.

Duties

Under the general direction of the EMS Director or designee provides a high standard of customer service and patient care/medical treatment and transportation to appropriate hospitals within State law, medical direction, division procedures within the scope of practice for the license.  Perform non-emergency duties as assigned.

  • Provides emergency medical treatment as per scope of practice, State law, procedures, and medical direction.
  • Provides accurate medical documentation of all EMS calls and treatment provided and ensures documentation is sent to the appropriate receiving hospital.
  • Reports verbally and in writing, observations and medical care of the patient.  Provides accurate medical documentation, in a timely manner, of all emergency medical treatment provided.
  • Maintains compliance with HIPAA standards and patient confidentiality.
  • Knowledgeable and compliant with all SCFR procedures including SCFR safety and infection control procedures.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with officials, other agencies, fellow employees, and the general public.
  • Responsible for station duties and assigned community outreach, including EMS coverage at events.
  • Ensures maintenance, cleanliness and readiness of ambulance, equipment, inventory and station. Notifies supervisor of any issues with equipment, vehicles, and calls.
  • Serves as a field trainer/preceptor for EMT students
  • Attends and participates in required department training.
  • Serves on City or Department advisory committees.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance and working hours. Scheduled shifts may include 24, 12, 8, or other shifts as assigned
  • Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency.  In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Requires the ability to speak clearly, distinctly and effectively with fellow employees; read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs and services; and to provide and follow verbal and written instructions.Physical requirements:  Ability to lift, carry, push, pull greater than 100 pounds.  Ability to work in the environments outlined below.  Moderate periods of sitting.  Intermittent climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, feeling, and smelling.Work Environment:  Moderate exposure to weather, extreme heat/cold, wet and or humid conditions, noise intensity levels, darkness/poor lighting, confined spaces, dirt/dust, and other adverse environmental conditions.  Use of protective equipment to include but not limited to eye wear, gloves, reflective vest, helmets and respiratory protection. Exposure to violent behavior, Traffic hazards, Electrical and fire hazards and Communicable diseases.

Minimum Requirements:
EMT:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS)
  • Current State of Iowa EMT Certification, or National Registry EMT

Or 
Advanced EMT (AEMT):

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS)
  • Current State of Iowa AEMT Certification, or National Registry AEMT

Possess and/or Obtain:
Must be able to obtain and possess a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License by employment start date.  Must be eligible to obtain an Iowa EMT Certification prior to date of hire.
