The City of Sioux City is looking for a Student Intern to assist Sioux City Fire Rescue with social media content creation to help with recruiting, safety, and public education topics.

The Student Intern will create a social media calendar, take photographs, short videos with a smartphone, respond to comments and direct messages on social platforms and work with staff to ensure clear and accurate promotion of Sioux City Fire Rescue.

The student must have strong writing and organizational skills, understand target audiences, and can utilize Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tik-Tok platforms. Creativity is essential. Knowledge of graphic design is preferred, but not required.

Potential candidates for this position must be students in good standing enrolled in a Business, Marketing, or Mass Communications major at a local college or university as either a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior.

Preferred  (1) a reference letter from an academic official, (2) samples of content creation,
(3) Resume and (4) Cover letter.

The duration of the internship will begin September 18, 2023. This position requires a time commitment of (8) eight hours per week from September 18, 2023, to December 29, 2023. This position pays $15.00 per hour.

Work schedule can be determined upon hire.

Job Knowledge:  Must have general knowledge, job skills and abilities associated with their particular work assignment; Good knowledge of the handling the public; ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines; ability to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.

Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication:  Ability to express oneself clearly both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and the general public; Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to customers (external and internal).  Requires the ability to write and speak clearly, distinctly and effectively with fellow employees and the general public; read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs and services; and to provide and follow verbal and written instructions.

Physical Requirements:  Regularly lifts up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 30 pounds. Good physical condition.

Work Environment:  Work may be performed inside a typical inside office environment with appropriate heating and cooling or in outdoor field conditions, which include varying weather conditions, occupational or environmental hazards typically associated with general public contact, and varying street level noises; and touring work sites that are in various stages of development.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Must have a work experience/educational agreement between the City and the educational institution in which they are enrolled and may be required to have a valid driver’s license.

Applicants for this class must be currently enrolled students in a degree program in good standing at an accredited technical school, college or university.
