Northwest Iowa Community College Appoints Dr. Greta Giese as First Athletic Director

Northwest Iowa Community College (NCC) announces the appointment of Dr. Greta Giese as the institution’s first-ever Athletic Director. Dr. John Hartog, President of NCC, made the announcement to the college community on August 15, 2023, recognizing her extensive experience and commitment to the College.  The Board of Trustees congratulated Dr. Giese on her new role during its meeting on August 21, 2023.

In her new role, Dr. Giese will be responsible for overseeing NCC’s athletic programs, which compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) conference and the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). With a wealth of knowledge and a collaborative leadership style, Dr. Giese is well-suited to guide NCC’s athletic department into a new era of success.

Dr. Giese stated, “I look forward to collaborating with students, faculty, and staff at NCC and throughout our community. Athletics development at the College is strategic to our recruitment, retention, and student experience objectives — and I am thrilled to be a part of this exciting journey and grateful for the opportunity to serve.”

Dr. Giese has been an integral part of the NCC community for many years, starting as the Coordinator of the Lifelong Learning & Recreation Center (LLRC) when it opened in 2011. She has since taken on various leadership roles and served on numerous committees, demonstrating her dedication to the college’s mission.

Under Dr. Giese’s leadership, the LLRC has become a hub for wellness activities, providing fitness solutions to NCC employees, students, and the wider community. Additionally, she played a vital role in the establishment and success of NCC’s Sports Shooting team, which began in 2019 and has achieved notable accomplishments in state competitions.

Looking towards the future, NCC recently announced plans to join the NJCAA conference and introduce men’s and women’s competitive soccer in the fall of 2024. In line with this strategic expansion, the appointment of an Athletic Director became imperative to coordinate and implement multiple sports programs across NCC’s campus.

Dr. Giese is excited to take on this new challenge and is eager to build upon NCC’s sporting achievements. Her immediate plans include developing comprehensive athletic programs, ensuring student-athletes receive exceptional support and resources, and fostering a culture of excellence both on and off the field.

President Hartog said, “Today, we celebrate a historic milestone as we welcome our first-ever Athletic Director to our esteemed institution, Dr. Greta Giese. This appointment marks a new chapter in our commitment to fostering excellence in both academics and athletics. We believe that sports play a vital role in the holistic development of our students, instilling values such as teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. With her leadership, I am confident that our athletes will flourish and our teams will thrive. Together, let us welcome Greta as our Athletic Director with open arms and rally behind her as she shapes the future of athletics at Northwest Iowa Community College.”

Outside of her professional responsibilities, Dr. Giese enjoys spending time with her husband, Mitch, and their two children, Wyatt and Lydia. They proudly call Sheldon, Iowa, their home.
