Steven Koel, Maintenance Technician, will be retiring from Northwest Iowa Community College on June 30, 2018. Koel has been with NCC for almost 24 years, since July 28, 1994.
After graduating from Northwest Iowa Technical College with a Plumbing, Heating and Cooling diploma Koel began his career working at Schoening and Koel Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. He worked at Baum Harmon Hospital in Primghar from 1981-1991. He worked at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, IA from 1991-1993. He then moved back to Primghar to work for Koel’s Plumbing & Heating. He served on the Primghar Ambulance Team for 25 years and the Primghar Fire Department for 20 years.
While at NCC, Koel won the Governor’s Volunteer Award for his community service on the Primghar Ambulance Team, Primghar Fire Department, Primghar Jaycees and in his church in October 2000. He was nominated by Vern Schoeneman, NCC Maintenance Supervisor. Koel was also awarded the NCC Outstanding Employee of the Year in 2013.
Koel commented, “In Maintenance there is never a dull moment. I appreciate being told “Thank you” for a job well done. I was extremely honored to be chosen by my coworkers as the Employee of the Year in 2013.”
Koel’s advice for his NCC coworkers, “Work hard and some day you will be able to retire. Enjoy life and keep God first and thank Him every day for what He has given you.”
Koel’s plans for retirement include spending time with his four grandsons, traveling, helping his daughter plan her wedding, relaxing and possibly finding a part time job.
Koel lives in Primghar with his wife, Cheryl.
