LLRC – East

LLRC members,

I regret that I have some sad news to share with you today. Last spring, NCC closed its LLRC-East due to COVID-19 procedures that would have required the College to staff and clean the LLRC-East facility 24/7.

Initially, the closure of LLRC-East was temporary, but it is now evident that NCC cannot re-open LLRC-East.  Therefore, NCC has decided that it will permanently cease operations at the LLRC-East facility.  This news will be met with disappointment by those who had utilized LLRC-East, and this is why the College was not hasty in making this decision.

While NCC is sorry that it can no longer offer its LLRC members the access to the LLRC-East facility, the College is profoundly grateful for its partnership with Sanford-Sheldon that has provided wellness experiences and great memories to those who utilized the LLRC-East facility.

As a reminder, the College provided a 9-week extension to every annual LLRC membership and then after that an additional 12-week extension.  This was the College’s way of saying thank you to our members for being patient as we designed our new policies so that we were able to re-open our main facility for all our members safely in May 2020.

We invite all our LLRC members to utilize our beautiful main facility on campus.  We will continue supporting the wellness goals of all our members as they work to develop strong minds and strong bodies.

We understand that we’ve all experienced challenges this past year and change is difficult. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at the information listed below.

We hope that you are healthy and well, and we hope to see you around the LLRC soon!

Be well,

Greta Giese, Ed.D.

General Information

** In light of the Governor’s proclamation on 11-11-2020, the LLRC has once again closed off every other cardio piece and will monitor the weight room to ensure that members are not using adjacent equipment.**

All workout space and equipment will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. We will not be taking reservations for any equipment or areas other than our Basketball Courts (please see the Basketball Court Usage section).

The following areas of the LLRC will be open but with limited capacity:

Aerobics Room – 20 or fewer individuals

North Court (reserved for court use) – 24 or fewer individuals

South Court (reserved for court use) – 24 or fewer individuals

Track – 10 or fewer individuals

Weight Room – 24 or fewer individuals

East Fitness – 10 or fewer individuals

North Fitness – 10 or fewer individuals

Lobby – 10 or fewer individuals

Social distancing practices will be enforced in these areas in addition to capacity limitations.

Access to the LLRC will continue to only be granted to members, including punch card users, NCC student members, monthly community members, and annual community members.

Guest passes are not yet available.

The indoor track will be accessible, but walkers will be asked to maintain social distancing practices.

Locker rooms and showers are now open. These spaces will be disinfected regularly by LLRC staff. On weekdays from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM, the locker-rooms may not be available during sanitizing efforts.

Towel service for sweat/hand towels is now available. Please do not user sweat/hand towels as shower towels – please bring and launder your own bath towels for shower/locker-room use.

Water-bottle filling stations and drinking fountains are available, but we strongly encourage LLRC members to bring their own water bottles when coming to exercise.

All LLRC members under the age of 16 must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No exceptions will be made.

Membership Extensions

When we re-opened the LLRC earlier this summer on May 18 after being closed for 9 weeks due to COVID-19, we extended memberships by 12 weeks starting from our re-opening date. All members that were active on March 15 were given the extension.

If you have any questions about your updated expiration date or membership status, please call the LLRC Front Desk at (712) 324-2493 or email LLRC Director Greta Giese at

Basketball Court Usage

Our courts are available by reservation for individual workouts/practice or immediate family use only. Immediate family includes family members that reside in the same household – for example, they are on a Family Membership together.

Reservations can be made in 30-minute increments for one hoop. Individuals and immediate family groups may reserve court space and time through our registration website at

Reservations can be made for basketball, tennis, volleyball, pickleball, and soccer use.

Directions on how to reserve court space and time.

No pick-up games will be allowed. If this occurs, individuals will be asked to disperse and their reservation will be null and void. If violations persist, no future admittance for the remainder of the summer will be allowed and no refund will be given.

Again, all LLRC members under the age of 16 must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No exceptions will be made.

Group Fitness and Personal Training

We are currently offering small group fitness classes as well as one-on-one personal training sessions. Current schedules for Group Fitness classes can be found on our website at

Social distancing practices will be strictly enforced, pre-registration for classes and training appointments will be required, and group fitness classes will have limited capacities.

Personal training clients can schedule appointments by calling the LLRC at (712) 324-2493.

What can I expect when I come to the LLRC?

Signage will be posted on exterior doors to notify LLRC members that no one with a fever or symptoms of COVID-19 will be allowed access to the facility.

To enter any campus building (including the LLRC), individuals must answer “no” to following COVID-19 Screening Questions (per the Sioux County Department of Public Health’s recommendations). Our LLRC employees must also answer “no” to this series of screening questions to come to work.

  • Have you been in close contact (within 6 feet for longer than 15 minutes) with someone who has a laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis within the last 14 days?
  • Do you currently have any of the following symptoms that appear to be abnormal to you?
    • Fever or chills
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • Fatigue
    • Muscle or body aches
    • Headache
    • New loss of taste or smell
    • Sore throat
    • Congestion or runny nose
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Diarrhea

All LLRC members under the age of 16 must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No exceptions will be made.

All LLRC members will be expected to follow social distancing practices – maintaining a distance of 6 feet apart.

Signage will be posted around the facility to promote social distancing guidelines.

Tape will be placed along the floor to indicate traffic flow and to encourage social distancing in areas where lines and groups may form.

We will only have one employee stationed at the LLRC front desk at a time during our hours of operation. Please be patient, because that staff person may be multitasking.

Plexiglas has been installed at the front desk for member and staff safety. Additional employees will be circulating throughout the facility to clean and sanitize between equipment use, but they will be wearing facial coverings and maintain social distancing guidelines.

Members are strongly encouraged to exercise individually, rather than in larger groups (6 or less arriving together at one time).

Hand sanitizer is readily available for employees and LLRC members and located throughout our facility. A station is located near the front entrance, and staff and members are encouraged to use hand sanitizer as they enter and exit the building.

LLRC members have always been asked and will still be expected to wipe down their equipment before using and after using it. As always, we have disinfectant wipes stations spaced out throughout the facility.

There is no “working in” on equipment and circuits are discouraged. LLRC members must finish sets and wipe off equipment.

Commonly-touched surfaces throughout the entire facility such as door handles, bathrooms, equipment, etc., will be cleaned and sanitized at least once every hour by LLRC employees.

Most of our shared, hand-held, and smaller equipment is located behind the LLRC front desk to be checked out for use. This will allow us to disinfect thoroughly between users.

Every 30 minutes, LLRC staff will announce social distance and cleaning protocol reminders on our PA system.

Facial Coverings

LLRC members are required to wear a face-covering/face mask when not able to appropriately maintain 6’ of social distancing.

LLRC members do not have to wear a face mask when they are at the LLRC exercising 6-feet away from others, however, if they are within 6-feet of another member, they will be expected to wear a face-covering/face mask while exercising. (For example, we know that at times the East Strength Room can get quite busy with individuals spotting each other during workouts, etc.- even when we are within our capacity requirement for that area. These times of being within 6-feet of each other are times members will be expected to put on a mask.)

When members are participating in an exercise where the level of exertion makes wearing a face-covering difficult, as long as social distancing can be maintained at all times, they do not need to wear a face covering.

In the East Strength Room at the LLRC, facial coverings will be required regardless of social distancing when 6 or more members are in that space.

The LLRC front desk staff have disposable masks available for times that members forget their mask or need a helpful nudge to follow this policy.

Refusal to follow our facial covering policy will result in LLRC users being asked to leave the facility. Repeated policy violations will result in membership suspension.

What happens if someone does not follow these re-opening policies?

The LLRC reserves the right to refuse service/access to any patron.

The LLRC will operate with a zero-tolerance policy. Failure to follow the above guidelines and policies will result in being asked to leave, no future admittance for the remainder of the month, and no refund.

We understand that change is hard, this list is long, and our phased approach to re-opening has been embraced by some and has constrained others. Your health and safety is our number one priority.

We are confident that our phased approach to re-opening is the best way to prioritize the health and well-being of our members, staff, and the communities we serve. We have been and will continue to work with local health professionals, our cleaning supply company, NCC’s leadership, public health personnel, and college recreation colleagues to ensure best practices are maintained. And we will continue to listen to members’ concerns and make adjustments as needed. Please let us know what we can do to make you feel more confident and safe.

NCC is committed to limiting the spread of the virus so that we can safely continue our academic year with our students, as well as, keep our community members healthy and safe.

If you have any questions about this policy change, please contact me at the information listed below.
